“If the T. rex was the most terrifying creature ever to walk the Earth, then Carcharodon megalodon was easily lord and master of the sea.” MEG: A Novel Of Deep Terror

Megalodon, meaning "big tooth", is an extinct prehistoric species of shark and the titular antagonist of the MEG Saga novel series written by Steve Alten.

In Steve Alten's novels and their film adaptations, Megalodon have adapted to thrive in the extreme pressures of deep underwater environments, allowing their species to survive into the present day by living at the bottom of the ocean's trenches, where they remained undiscovered by man for millions of years.

Trivia[]

  • In real life, the Megalodon would not have appeared as simply a larger version of the great white shark, as these species were descendants of two entirely different evolutionary lineages. Megs likely had a much shorter nose, or rostrum, when compared to the great white, with a flatter, almost squashed jaw. Like whales, it would have also had extra-long pectoral fins to support its tremendous weight and size.
    • Despite its many scientific inaccuracies, the film is due credit in its innovative design choices for the Meg, straying away from the idea of an enormous great white shark as depicted in other works and putting more accurate features (shorter snout, larger fins, heavy build, etc.)
  • Meg 2: The Trench opens with a scene depicting a Megalodon killing a mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, dragging the beast into the depths of the ocean. Though the idea of the two giants clashing with one another makes for a thrilling spectacle, they never actually lived at the same time. The Meg roamed the seas during the Miocene and Pliocene eras 23 to 2.6 million years ago, long after the T. Rex went extinct during the Late Cretaceous period around 65 million years ago.
